50th Birthday Invites

This week I received an e-mail asking for some 50th birthday invites to be designed. The main aim for the invites was for them to be jazzy and modern as requested in the e-mail. After a number of layouts and color samples were sent out to the client, a decision was made for these ones to be pushed on to print. I was very happy with the outcome, as was the client.

Signpost Exhibiton

During my time in Scotland, I was lucky to find the Signspotting Project. This was an exhibition held in the centre of Edinburgh, which I planned on visiting for a long time. The funny signs made me think of the things I can do within my work. Maybe I can make some of my ideas funny with not to serious attitude towards it.

Guardian Advertising

As I was reading the Observer this past Sunday, I came across this advertisement for a seven series segment for the Second World War in the next couple of weeks in the Guardian. The use of colour is very good but what captured my eye was the illustrators use of the German Swastika. I found this piece of work fantastic and i was unfortunate not to find the illustrators name behind this piece.

Volkswagen Advertising

During the summer, one brief set was to produce a handbook. This was to record all idea's we had on the spot so in effect, we would not forget them when ready to note them down. I have to say, the idea for me is very useful. The things I walk past and see, the articles i read in newspapers are very inspiring. One thing that i was fond off was this plastic cellophane bag containing the Observers magazine.

It was not so much what was inside the bag that interested me, but what was on the outside. As i started to open it, i read closely the information in the bright yellow square. Before this, i generally thought it was your usual safety notice for children but as i noticed the Volkswagen logo, i decided to read on. The small piece of text refers to a segment of the film, American Beauty. I found this use of advertising was fun and witty.

Sound and Vision Disco A5 Flyer

After a week away, i arrived home to a phone call from a family member urgent for my help. He has decided to take up disc joking and has successfully been given a slot in a pub every Friday night. He called for some flyers to be designed for as soon as possible. I decided look into different types of music and began to think of a design in my head. After a few sketches on paper, I had one flyer completed within the hour but was not completely happy with it. I decided to focus on another design but think of all the previous artwork i have done within the past two years. I completed the design of the other flyer and sent them both. My cousin is very happy with both flyers and has chosen the one above to print.

Digital Film Archive Fund A5 Flyer

On my fourth day at Reform Creative, a brief was e mailed in asking for a double-sided A5 flyer to be designed quickly. The design had to be put together within four hours so there was enough time for slight adjustments from the clients if needed. Rich was taking on the brief but as I was eager to get an understanding on working towards tight deadlines, I decided to see what I was able to produce within the time. Rich went through the brief with me and pointed out some of the things I should think about when designing the piece.

As the flyer was for the Digital Film Archive Fund, the website pointed out this was for public access to screen heritage innovative exhibition, education and online programming. As I began to design, I was asking for pointers and opinions from both Chris and Rich. They both were happy to guide me through it. As the typography became to the tweaking stage, Paul made some useful pointers within InDesign. As me and Rich was finished, Paul sent to artwork off to the client. The next day, Paul explained the client preferd my design and will go to print within days. This is the first piece of work which has gone commercial and I am delighted.

Contact Poster

The early stages of the Contact brief were a working out process on how I would apply the message, which was on the brief. I started to use the logo and different brush stokes and place the number above, under and the right side of the text. From the beginning stages to the outcome, I am very happy. The journey was an on going learning process and I feel this was definitely worth it.
